Text: Abstract Algebra (second edition) by D.S.Dummit and R.M.Foote, Wiley. There is a copy of the book in reserve in the library
Course Description: The course will cover the basic notions of commutative algebra: rings, ring homomorphisms, ideals, modules over a ring. We will cover chapters 7,8,10,11 from the book.
Grading The final grade will be determined as follows:
Midterm The midterm is schaduled for March 3, during class time, in H-632. The material for the midterm is all the material in sections 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4. No make-up midterm is given. If you miss a midterm for medical or other reason, documentation will be required and your final grade will be computed by prorating the rest of your performance
Homework No late homework is accepted and we will drop the lowest homework score.
Homework I: section 7.1, problems 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11,13,14,17,23,24,25,26.. Due Wednesday, 01/21/04.
Homework II: section 7.2: 3,4,5,6,7, section 7.3: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,12,17,21. Due Monday, 02/09/04.
Homework III: section 7.4: 2,3,4,7,10,11,13,14,15,16,17,18,25,26. Due Monday, 01/03/04.
