We are constantly recruiting participants for our experiments. Your participation is greatly appreciated! For 1 hour of participation you will be paid between $8 and $10 (depending on the experiments in which you participate). Besides the cash (!), participation in experiments is a great opportunity for you to have hands-on experience in the running of experiments. And think of it as a contribution you make to science! If you'd like to participate, please read below and fill-out the form or call the lab (848-2424, extension 2210) to schedule a time for your participation. (Students participating for credit or as part of the Participant Pool are not paid).
  • Language Requirement
Most of the experiments we conduct require native speakers of English. This means that English has to be the first language you learned and is your main language right now, if you speak more than one language. Sometimes, we conduct experiments that require French as the main language and English as a second language. Please e-mail or call us if you are not sure if you qualify or if you are a native speaker of French and want to know if we are conducting an experiment that may be appropriate for you.

  • Experimental Techniques
We use diverse experimental techniques in our experiments. Most experiments require that you read or listen to sentences or words presented on the computer and press buttons on a keypad to make decisions regarding the material presented to you. For instance, you may be listening to a sentence presented over headphones and, at the same time, you may have to attend to words presented on the screen. For experiments run with the eye-tracker, a miniature camera will record your eye movements in response to sentences, pictures, or movies presented on a computer monitor or projection screen.

  • Ethics
All our experiments have been approved by the Department of Psychology and the University ethics committees. We only investigate the type of response (e.g., reaction time or rating judgment) you make to the stimuli presented to you. We do not investigate your language social skills, your intelligence or any factors as that. We do not identify your individual responses since your name is not registered in our data collection procedures. Our aim is to gather group average responses to types of stimuli, not individual data. All our procedures are nonintrusive and very safe! But if you feel any discomfort during your participation, you are free to discontinue your participation at any time.
